The Score Report

Using built-in communication tools found in the Score Reports, you can review your work, read teacher comments, and leave messages to your teacher about your work.

Grammar, Spelling, and Teacher Feedback

  • In the score report, you will see specific spelling and grammar errors highlighted within the scored draft. Spelling errors will be highlighted in red. Grammar errors will be highlighted in green.
  • To review errors and read suggestions for improvement, click on a Highlighted Error. Use the Arrow Keys to navigate to the next error.  
  • Click on the yellow notes within the draft to read comments written by your teacher.

Suggested Lessons

  • The Utah Compose system recommends specific lessons based on your scores and provides a link to the lessons within the score report by category.
  • To view a recommended lesson, click the lesson link and follow the instructions within each lesson. To return to an essay from the lessons age, click on Back
  • Some lessons include audio in which the words in the lesson are read aloud. To hear the audio, click on the audio button or hover over the Audio Icon within the lesson.

Scores

Score Reports for Narrative, Informative/Explanatory, and Argumentative Essays

  • Your scores are displayed based on the Utah Compose Scoring Rubric including the total score and a score for each of the six characteristics of writing.
  • Scroll down to view suggestions for improvement and lesson recommendations for each trait.

Score Reports for Constructed Response Essays

  • You will receive a holistic score on a scale from 1 (lowest) to 3 (highest).
  • The holistic score includes focus, development of ideas, and organization.
  • Scroll down to view suggestions for improving your constructed response essay.

Additional Scores for Textual Evidence and Content Accuracy

  • Your teacher may have scored your writing for two additional categories: Textual Evidence and Content Accuracy. Scroll down to view the scores and read the comments provided by your teacher for these areas.
  • For each category, the number of stars displayed represents your score (refer to the attached scoring rubric link to assist with understanding a score).
  • Review the comments in the Comment box (if applicable).

Student-to-Teacher Messaging

  • To write a message to your teacher, type in the Messages box and click Post Message.
  • Your teacher can read your message and return a message to you within the score report. You will receive a notification on the course homepage in the Student Writing History if you receive a message.

Revising an Essay

  • You can submit multiple drafts of an essay to try to improve your score. The number of drafts allowed for an essay is 30, but your teacher can change this for specific prompts.
  • To revise an essay and submit a new draft for scoring, click the Revise button.
  • The previous draft will appear and you may make any desired changes and click Submit.
  • You can view previous drafts and their score reports by clicking the draft number under Submissions. Click Latest Draft to return to the most recent draft.

Returning to your Score Report

You can see a display of the Score Report immediately after you submit an essay to be scored. If you need to exit the program but wish to return to a Score Report at a later time, there are two ways to do this:

  • To access a score report, click the Portfolio tab.
    • In the Performance section, click the Student Averages: Trait and Total Scores link.
    • Click the date next to the writing you wish to review.
  • Another way to access a score report is through the Course Home Page in the Writing History section.
    • Click the Home tab to navigate to the Course Home Page. 
    • Under the Writing History, click the date next to the writing you wish to review.  

Essay Formatting and Finalizing

  • When you are completely finished revising the content of your essay (after several revisions and peer reviews, if instructed), you can format and finalize your essay for publication.
  • To format an essay, click the Format button. An alert will appear, asking if you are sure you want to start formatting. Revisions made to your essay while formatting will not be updated in your scored draft(s).

  • You may make changes such as font, font size, bold, italics, subscripts, etc.
  • If you need to return to essay revising and scoring, click the Return to Revising button. NOTE: If you click this button, all text added and changes made during formatting will be lost.

Formatting an Essay

  • To preview your formatted essay, click the Preview button.
  • Click Edit to make more formatting changes or Finalize to finalize the essay. Any content-related changes you make at this point will not be reflected in your score.
  • Once you click Finalize, another alert will appear, reminding you that no formatting or other changes can be made at this point.

Finalize Essay

  • You can click the Print button to print your finalized essay.
  • When selecting a finalized essay from your Writing History, the last scored draft is shown by default. To view the finalized essay, click Published Essay under the submission history.
